The market town of Diss is situated in the Waveney Valley. It was established around one of the deepest natural inland lakes in the country, the Mere. The Mere covers an area of about 6 acres and is about 6 metres (18 feet) deep. The mud at the bottom of the lake is believed to be 15 metres (51 feet) deep. The water level is maintained by a number of underground springs near to the northern edge. During the 1960s and 1970s, locally produced speedboats were tested on the mere.
