The golf course is very wet after the heavy snow melted in a late December thaw. The line of trees behind marks the course of the River Tyne. Beyond, on the hill, is the village of Heddon on the Wall. The 1:2500 OS map from 1919 shows that there was a large area of allotment gardens in this location, north of the railway, used by the miners of Clara Vale. They extended almost to the riverside by 1942. Later maps show their subsequent disuse, a refuge tip and then incorporation in an expanded golf course that had existed on Doctor's Stanners to the east.
