Built sometime between 1839 and 1875 on the former parish between Chailey and Barcombe, the house was in Chailey the lane is in Barcombe. Markstakes Lane itself runs from Town Littleworth Road to the A275 at South Street. The lane has remained untreated during the cold spell though it is driveable with care.
