The wheatsheaf figures on the arms of the Bakers Company (1486). It is also one of the devices on the arms of the Brewers' Company (1438). It has been a popular sign with pubs since the 17th century. It was once also a regularly seen sign for bakers. It has been said that some pubs with the sign also baked bread on the same premises and combined these two staffs of life in one business. This sign was painted in July 1997 by Mike Hawkes.
