The sign shows the county coat of arms - the Sussex Martlets. I wish to thank fellow member Richard Hoare http://www.geograph.org.uk/profile/38036 for all his help in researching the Rev. Langdon. In 1839 the Rev. George Langdon formed the first cricket club in Sussex which was originally known as the Royal Sussex County Cricket Club, it gained the royal prefix owing to the interest that King George IV took in the sport. Among its early members was John Wisden, the founder of the Almanack. For further information on his cricketing career http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/16453.html
