Left is High Street (for Salisbury and Whitchurch), the Newbury direction is Kingsclere Road, far right is London Road and near right is Winchester Street. The White Hart Hotel is on one corner. In the 13th century an entirely new town was planned by Bishop de Lucy of Winchester on the south side of the river. This was laid out in a grid pattern.
