The traditional late 18th and 19th century barns and drystone walls of the Yorkshire Dales are one of the most characteristic features of the landscape. Both played a key part in the farmer's year. The walls enclosed grazing land and the field barns or 'laithes' housed cattle and the hay to feed them over the winter. The muck collected inside was spread on the surrounding meadows in spring to feed the next hay crop.
