St Peter's Church together with its twin church, St Paul's in Jarrow, was once the heart of one of the first Christian monasteries in Britain. In the C7th it was a major centre of European learning, with international influence. The church was founded by nobleman, Benedict Biscop in 674AD; its twin in Jarrow seven years later.
