Viewed from the still snow covered northern slope of the unenclosed heathland towards the almost verdant enclosed land of the estate which is now a stud farm. The estate grew out of what was reputed to be the area of John of Gaunt's hunting lodge with the house occupying the area of the 17th century keeper's lodge.
