This sign has been used since the late 15th century. It has been disappearing from urban areas in recent years but is still common in the country, especially where fox-hunting occurs. The fox is often coupled with other animals or objects, but when alone he is likely to be seen in comic form. The fox occurs frequently as an heraldic charge.
