The square is named for the former location here of one of Madam Bevan's circulating schools, an C19th charitable enterprise to provide education for children and to train teachers. There is an explanatory plaque nearby, see Image This image shows the old water pump and the way up to the mountain (where the sign indicates a cul-de-sac). In the other direction the road leads to the Gwaun valley.
