The station which stood more or less where I am standing was opened in 1856 and closed in 1955 though by that time only the line through to Silloth which diverged to the left at the extreme edge of this picture remained. The line to Port Carlisle had already completely closed in 1932 and up until 18 years before its closure it had normally only known horse drawn passenger trains. http://www.cumbria-railways.co.uk/port-carlisle-railway-photos.html The railway itself had replaced and been built along the course of the Port Carlisle Canal.
