The village of Tong in Shropshire was bought by George Durant from the Duke of Kingston upon Hull in 1764 for £40,000. George is believed to have made his money in the West Indies from slave owning. George reconstructed the nearby 16th Century Tudor castle in the gothic style. The castle later fell into disrepair and was blown up in 1954. Tong Hall built for George Durrant in 1842 is a Grade II Listed Building.
