View westward, towards Huddersfield, Sowerby Bridge and Manchester; ex-Lancashire & Yorkshire/London & North Western combined four-track cross-Pennine major route. It was particularly busy on this stretch between Heaton Lodge and Thornhill Junctions and at least two moving trains are visible in the photograph. The locomotive about to warm me in its smoke is Stanier 8F 2-8-0 No. 48453.
