This section of the canal has been dry since the canal was breached in 1936. As there was no through traffic, the breach was never repaired although a dam (just visible in this photograph) was built to permit the canal from Ladyshore to Bury to continue in use (which it did until the 1950s, finally being officially closed in 1961).
