The first time I saw this windmill it was as a backdrop to some old folks in white coats playing crown green bowls on a sunny day in Hull's East Park. It took me by surprise as it's not a view I'd normally associate with the city. A blue heritage plaque on the front of the mill reads: "In a cottage near this his grandfather's mill was born JOSEPH RANK 1854-1943, founder of the milling firm of Joseph Rank Ltd.". The flour milling company is still in business as Rank Hovis McDougall (RHM), and Joseph's son Joseph Arthur grew up to become a famous film producer and founder of the Rank Organisation, now known as The Rank Group Plc.
