The Coventry canal, seen here near Nuneaton, was started in 1768, and opened from Coventry to Bedworth by 1769 (astonishing). By 1771 it had come through here and progressed to Atherstone, by which time the money ran out, and James Brindley the engineer was sacked! Legal and financial wrangles delayed the continuation to Fazeley until 1790, by which time other companies had usurped the rest of the route to Fradley - a long and involved story!
