This was at the entrance to the grounds of The Woodlands (now Bagshaw Museum), which was the home of the Sheard family until they had to sell it due to financial difficulties. In 1909 Batley Council were able to buy it for a nominal £5 because there were no other bidders, and the park opened in 1910.
