Although the inscription is now badly weathered, Harriet's name and dates are still quite clear. Her death sparked the infamous "Penge Murder" trial of 1877. Perhaps a miscarriage of justice occurred but the case certainly helped to establish the Court of Appeal. (Previously, no appeal against a death sentence was permitted.)
