The grassed area just visible on the left is where an Esso petrol station stood at least until 1986. The Torridge bridge at Bideford opened in 1987 allowing the A39 between Barnstaple and Bideford to bi-pass Fremington. I suspect that the subsequent drop in traffic resulted in the closure of this refuelling facility.
