A 'CableTel' access cover on Elaine Street, Belfast Image CableTel, from what I can gather, was formed in 1993 as 'CableTel International' to take advantage of the deregulation of the UK cable market. It initially acquired local cable-franchises covering Guildford, Northern Ireland and parts of Central Scotland and South Wales. In 1996 the company acquired National Transcommunications Limited (NTL), and from 1998 the name NTL was adpoted as the sole trading name for the entire company. The company now trades as Virgin Media.
