Slate headstones, often Swithland slate, are common in this area. The best examples from the 18th century have rhyming epitaphs. The winged face depicts the soul rising to heaven, and is a 'Belvoir Angel' (The Vale of Belvoir being a few miles to the north). For more angels, see http://www.geograph.org.uk/snippet/6050
