Continue south down Montpelier Road until you reach the crossroads with Western Road (B2066). Opposite Waitrose is this building built in 1823 by Amon Wilds and Charles Busby and originally called The Priory or Priory Lodge. An example of Regency Gothic it remained a private house until 1898 when it was converted into a drapery shop. This then became a Plummers department store until the 1950s when it was taken over by Debenhams who stayed in this position until 1998 when they moved to a new shop in the revamped Churchill Square. For a while it was feared the removal of Debenhams would hasten the demise of this part of Western Road, however, the store has been split into smaller units and are now occupied by a restaurant, Blockbuster Videos, a Pound shop and an organic grocery shop.
