Daniel Stewart was born in Perthshire in 1741 and began work on his parents croft. However,he came to Edinburgh becoming a wig maker. With the gentry wearing wigs and wigs in use in the courts he prospered and served some time in India. He died in 1814 leaving funds to found a 'hospital', (school).In 1848 the famous architect David Rhind was appointed to build the school, the first pupils coming in 1855.Managed by the Merchant Company of Edinburgh it is now combined with Melville College and Mary Erskine's and claims to have the greatest number of pupils of any school in Scotland.
