Rochdale Corporation's electric trams reached Bacup centre in July 1911, and ran until 1932 when they were replaced by motor buses. The Rochdale to Bacup route was Rochdale's No 16 service and was normally operated with double-deckers. Changes came in the mid-1960s when the Corporation's buses were taken over by SELNEC, later becoming Greater Manchester Transport. The route is now privatised and operated as a through service, numbered 464, from Rochdale to Accrington, with comfortable new single-deck vehicles.
