The church of St Lawrence, Norwich

Viewed from the north. The church of St Lawrence > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2102358 is one of five churches along St Benedicts Street within 100 metres of each other. It is situated on a steep slope > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2102352 above the River Wensum, the view is now obscured by houses. The river once used to be considerably wider, and there was a herring fishery just below the church. The tower is 28 metres high and has a distinctive tower that supports a pinnacle > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2102368 at one corner. The pinnacle was added in 1893. The church was completed in 1472 and is one of the largest in Norwich. Its interior is now almost without furnishings but the carved angels and fretwork tracery that decorate the hammerbeam roof are still in place.
