It is amazing to realise that Mere Water Mill is less than forty metres away to the east of this little brook. Image In fact, watermills do not need large amounts of water to turn the mill wheel, just a constant modest flow usually provided by damming the stream above the mill to hold a reserve pool from which a flow can be turned on or off when required. Philley Brook flows into Spittle Brook, which then joins the Smestow River near Ashwood.
