This is the site of the former George Hotel, where Admiral Horatio Nelson stayed on the night of 13th/14th September 1805, his last night on British soil. It was a popular hotel for Naval officers. The following day he set off on HMS Victory to the battle of Trafalgar, where, despite an English victory against the French and Spanish forces, he was killed. The hotel was bombed in 1941 and subsequently these flats were built on the site. There is a close up of the plaque here Image]
