There are two Hoptons in Suffolk, and three churches, although one is a ruin. The other is near Garboldisham. This church is modern and was built in 1865/66 and replaces the mediaeval church which was destroyed by fire. LINK It was designed by S.S.Teulon and built by Brown & Bailey of Norwich. The design is revolutionary and has a central square tower which becomes octagonal above the roof-line. The belfry is accessed by the turret staircase with the conical roof. The interior is mainly red and white brick dressing with stonework around the windows. Everything in the church is modern and nothing was retrieved from the old church. St. Margaret’s has been acclaimed as ‘a fine example of a Victorian church in which everything is boldly executed’.
