Built in the late 1860s the town hall remained in use until the new Civic Centre opened in the mid 1970s. The building was converted for its current use as Magistrates Courts. The courts will shortly move to custom-built accommodation on Darlington Street providing this escapes the forthcoming government 'spending review'.
