A vast pile of salt stands in this storage shed at the British Salt Ltd site beside the Trent and Mersey Canal. Deposits of rock salt were left in this area as seawater receded from the salt marshes of the Cheshire basin in the triassic period. There is evidence that exploitation of this resource began in Roman times and has been a significant industry in Middlewich ever since.
