From http://www.lympsham.org.uk/Lympsham%20News/Lympsham%20News%20Dec%202007.pdf , and by Peter Hopkins: "The name Hobbs Boat Inn is traditionally associated with a fearsome Danish Viking Pirate called Hubba, who pillaged and raped the North Somerset and Devon coastline during the late 800s AD ... the Hobbs Boat Inn sign depicted Hubba himself at his most rapacious, though sadly, recent research has determined that the name ‘Hobbs’ derives from a Mr. Hobbs, sometime owner of the inn." And the inn sign now shows, rather tamely, wine glasses. All the same, Hobbs is a name with devilish connotations. A very similar view, from The Crescent, to Image, though the name lettering has changed.
