The new road crosses the Ouse Burn at the south end of Jesmond Dene, between Armstrong Bridge, towering above the glacier carved valley Image, and Benton Bridge. Building of the Cradlewell bypass Image in 1993 became the setting for a major protest largely centred about the destruction of the 180 or so mature trees in its path. It became one of the first direct action tree sit-ins by what became known as the flower-pot tribe. Their moving story is told here http://www.eco-action.org/dt/jesmond.html
