Scruffy looking in comparison to when in spring and summer breeding plumage this individual has completed its moult and shows pale tips to the feathers that will wear away over winter to form its handsome breeding plumage. Winter plumaged birds and those in moult often confuse bird watchers and the unwary might be led to think this to be a Whinchat.
