Dukinfield Hall War Memorial

Situated at Globe Square Image by the Globe Hotel Image The memorial was publicly unveiled on March 20th 1920 by Captain George Heathcote, an alderman of the borough, on land which had previously been railed round by the council. The memorial is of Yorkshire stone, stands 14ft high, and gothic in design. It is surmounted by a Latin cross on which are the words: "England's Call we answered". Upon an annulet beneath laurel wreathes is carved "1914 - 1919". The shaft and four panels on which the names of the 110 men are inscribed is 2ft 3ins square and the base a yard square. Over the panel, facing north, are the words "In Memoriam" and below are the names of those who have made the supreme sacrifice. Over the other three panels, "In Honour" appears, followed by the names of those who returned from the war. The designers and constructors were Messrs J.J. Hurst and son of Denton. The whole cost was defrayed by public subscription, organised by a local representative committee which had Mr T. Lindley as secretary and councillor George Saxon as treasurer.
