St John the Baptist's church > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1514651 was built on the site of an older church, situated on a hill looking down on Hall Road. Because of the rapid rise in the population in the 1820s a south aisle was added to create more seating for the congregation. The church was extensively repaired in 1900 and in 1978 it was restored once again and many of the C18 wall memorials > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2066259 were removed. Unusually, the baptismal font > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2066258 was moved to the east end of the south aisle at some time in the past. It is original and dates from the 14th century. Separating the font from the organ is a modern batik by local artist Irene Ogden.
