The land was donated by Robert Geoffrey Gunter to the borough of Fulham, to be laid out as a memorial garden to commemorate the damage caused in West Kensington by bombs during WW2, especially on the night of 20th Feb. 1944. The gardens were opened on 23rd July 1949.
