Competitors enter at 20 second intervals, walking in at one corner of the shallow end. They swim four lengths in the first lane, duck under the rope, and repeat this in three more lanes, exiting and being timed walking out at the other corner of the shallow end. Caps are mandatory (and supplied) so that swimmers can see each other. Competitors may be in trunks, shorts, or triathlon suits. Competitors start in order of their estimated swim times.
