View northward, towards Crewe etc. This station, on the ex-London & North Western West Coast Main Line south of Crewe, was closed to passengers on 4/2/52 (goods on 19/8/63), long before the electrification of the route, which was achieved in stages over several years to 6/3/67. In spite of the forest of steelwork and wires, electric trains had not started running past here in 1962. Instead, about 10 men - no High Visibility clothes - are casually standing, even sitting, around chatting on the Up Slow and Down Fast lines, while an Up relief express rushes past on the Up Fast, headed by a BR Standard Class 7 'Britannia' 4-6-2, No. 70032 'Tennyson'.
