Built in the 18th century, it originally had its arches open so as to provide cover for market traders, who had their stalls along here. Today the building is used by Lydd Town Council, who effectively have limited powers equivalent to a parish council. At one time Lydd was a Borough but, like many other places, it has suffered from the seeping away of power to more regionalised and centralised administration. Image
