The historic George Hotel was built in the reign of King James I in 1620, on the site of an earlier tavern. It presumably got its present name in the following century, when a succession of kings named George came to the throne. It has had an interesting history, and was used by many of the smugglers who used to be active in Lydd in past centuries. The so-called Battle of Lydd took place here in 1721, when two arrested smugglers were held here, but freed by members of a mob. Today the George acts as a hotel, pub and restaurant, as it has done for almost 400 years. Image
