The "a" suffix is required as this junction is a relatively recent addition to the M5. Why a junction was not provided here when this section of the M5 was opened in 1971 is something of a mystery. Possibly it was due to dithering over whether the A40 or A417 should form the principal route east from Cheltenham and Gloucester. Over time, the A417 has "won": hence the junction.
