This is the high altar and its marble canopy (or ciborium). Note the candlesticks set on a marble pillar to the left of the altar. The interior of the church is high and dark and is built of austerely plain brickwork. It is prevented from looking grim by the illumination of its sumptuous fittings and decoration.
