The nearest building is undoubtedly a former steam engine house, most probably for a house-built beam engine. The massive stone square probably supported the entablature that the beam sat on. The tall end windows are typical of engine houses and would have provided a ready path for components entering the building. I know nothing about the engine that went here. The main block also has windows suggesting a centrally situated double beam engine. The site also had a horizontal engine at some time and large gas engines. It still retains a steam turbine, diesel engine and steam fire pump along with four derelict boilers.
