Located beside the bridge carrying the A4144, St. Aldate's over the River Thames. The name comes from the old rowing days when racing eights were made of wood and Salters boatyard opposite was a source of such boats. The leading university crew would be proclaimed “head of the river” and they would ceremonially burn their boat before an evening of celebration. Info from http://thames.me.uk/s01680.htm .
