The station is part of the City Line, which reopened for passenger services in 1987. Unlike neighbouring stations designed for a maximum train length of 2 coaches, Ninian Park has the longest platforms on the line, accommodating up to nine coaches. These were built several decades ago to accommodate the football specials for fans visiting the nearby Cardiff City F.C. stadium (now replaced by Cardiff City Stadium). Before 1987, the platforms were used only for football specials.
