A recent initiative to protect the river bank vegetation and reduce the erosion has resulted in significant stretches of the Esk being fenced off like this. Although some places will benefit, I do feel these awkward areas will soon be dominated by thistles and ragwort creating weed problems in neighbouring fields. Also reducing the release of gravelly deposits from the banks may reduce the amount of material in the water making spawning areas harder to find. Shading the water with even more trees may be undesirable too unless some of the older trees are coppiced (which was frequently done until recent decades).
