A detailed view of the preserved part of the old Floating Bridge winding gear at its former terminal in Wharf Road, Woolston, showing how the cogs on the wheel engaged with the chain links to draw the ferries (there were three of them) across the River Itchen. The supporting pier between first and second spans from the Woolston end of the Itchen Bridge is in the background. The first span (right) is of 262 ft (79.85 metres); as is the corresponding one at the city centre end of the bridge. The second span is one of three each of 410 feet (124.97 metres). The design which was finally accepted for the bridge was one of seven alternatives put forward by the consulting engineers R Travers Morgan.
