River Lee Navigation: Clapton Junction railway viaduct

Originally built by the Great Eastern Railway around the 1880s this viaduct was constructed to take their line north out of Liverpool Street via Clapton station over the River Lee Navigation. Just to the east, and to the right in the photograph, is Clapton Junction where the new railway joined up with the existing Lee Valley line. The brick arches to the right are where the pioneer aviator A V Roe (1877 - 1958) based himself and assembled his aircraft when he undertook his historic triplane flights over Walthamstow Marshes in July 1909. A V Roe was the first Englishman to design, build and fly an all-British aeroplane.
