A dark, forbidding building erected in 1864 and described a hundred years later as one of the worst schools in Edinburgh for its Dickensian conditions and severe overcrowding. It had no playground. Someone of Irish background who grew up in the area told me that the streets east of Tollcross were practically an Irish-Catholic ghetto up to the 1950s. The school's closure was long overdue when it finally took place in 1967 and the remaining classes were transferred to the old St Peter's School in Falcon Avenue at Morningside. The present use of the building is not immediately apparent but it seems to have been converted into residential flats.
